This new resource allows you to download and review copies of the major contracts awarded by the Victorian Government since 1992. The Register is an integral part of the Government's strategy for restoring democracy, accountability and open government to Victoria. In January 2000, Premier Steve Bracks commissioned an independent Audit Review of Government Contracts ("Audit Review") to examine the privatisation, outsourcing and other contracting arrangements entered into by the Victorian Government between 1992 and 1999. The report of the Audit Review, published in June 2000, criticised the excessive secrecy which had previously surrounded government contracts and privatisation activity. It recommended that Government departments should publicly disclose, to the maximum extent possible, the details of the major contracts to which they are a party. The report went on to identify 70 major contracts which it suggested should be given priority for disclosure. The Bracks
Government has committed to negotiate the release of the contracts recommended
by the Audit Review. This process is now under way. Over the coming weeks,
after discussions with the private sector firms concerned, the Government
will progressively publish the contracts on the Central Register. It is
intended that the Register should also give users access to any new contracts
over $10 million in value which the Victorian Government signs in future. Click here to enter the Register. Important notice The Government has aimed to achieve the maximum level of public disclosure of the contacts to which it is a party. It has been necessary, however, to withhold certain parts of the contracts listed on the Central Register from disclosure. In some cases, the Government has been prevented from disclosing the information by confidentiality clauses agreed to by the previous Government. In other (very limited) cases, information has been withheld because disclosure would be contrary to the public interest. |
